"THE NATIVE DANCER SPRINT" GRADE I 6 Furlongs on the Hong Kong turf $500,000
All horses, 3 years old.
The following is an excerpt that I wrote for the SRF a couple of years ago about Native Dancer:
"I went looking for my old friend Cindy Pierson to get more information on Native Dancer. I found Cindy at a local Mexican restaurant. She was at a corner table, alone, obviously on her second or third main course because there were plenty of dirty dishes already on the table. Cindy was chasing the last enchilada around her plate with her fork. It was not a pretty site so I interrupted her, "You remember Native Dancer?"
"Sure, the original Gray Ghost was Native Dancer" she said, "who raced to fame in the early days of television. His gray color made him easy to spot on the small black and white TVs of the early 1950's and his winning ways quickly made him a fan favorite. Racing was televised much more frequently than today so millions saw him win and win often. He retired with a lifetime record of 22 starts, 21 wins, and one second. His lone defeat was in the 1953 Kentucky Derby where he lost by a nose to Dark Star. He lost Horse of the Year honors that year to Tom Fool but did win the title in 1954 before a recurring foot problem caused his retirement. He has also been a very big influence as a stallion through his daughter Natalma and her son the great sire Northern Dancer as well as his son Raise a Native, sire of the great Mr. Prospector. " I thanked Cindy for the info and told her I would use it in my SRF article. "Anytime" she said and got up , passed gas, and left. The waiter presented me with her bill. Darn it all, it may take all of my SRF money for this month to pay this off."

Silent Suspect has had only one lifetime start and is still a maiden. This race should prove to be way to difficult for him. His only race was an owner restricted MSW for 3 year old and up. He led most of the way before getting caught in the early stretch and losing by over 7 lengths. If he wins I will eat my cowboy hat.

Jack Frost SAF has two wins in just two starts. He is still learning how to run and needs to step in up in the speed department to expect to win this race. Still you have to respect any colt that wins his first two races. We will see how he does against some of the more experienced stakes colts in this race.

Gessle The Great is a legitimate contender for the win. In his 8 races he has 5 wins and 2 place efforts. Was kind of suspect in his last race which was a grade III event going 7 furlongs. Possibly was just a bounce and he will come back strong. In his race before that last one he won a 6 1/2 furlong stakes race with a 93 speed rating which is right up there with what will be needed to win this race. He has tried two different styles of running with success in both.

Air Blue tries the turf for the first time today. Has some graded race experience which will help his effort. He has 4 in the money races in 9 starts. Has shown some signs of brilliance with a 92 speed rating in a 7 furlong event in Texas. At some point in his career he will probably be a pretty good route competitor. He will have to turn on the after burners to get the win today.

Awakening Showed some signs of waking up in his last race, a 6 furlong event on the turf in Vermont. He won that race going away to a 2 1/4 length victory. His graded attempts have left some doubts however. He was still pretty green when thrown into his first graded III race after just breaking his maiden. He did have an excuse though because he caught an off track that was not to his liking. His very next race was again a grade III event and I think he still had mixed feelings after his previous race. His last two races were to build his confidence back up and that appeared to do the trick for him. Now back into the graded company with confidence he may finish the race well before he realizes what he got into.

BBorascas has 3 wins in 3 tries with big speed figures from 93 to 95 since he broke his maiden and all on the turf. No stakes experience yet but with the excellent breeding and excellent speed he definately fits and is a contender.

Affirmed Dancer started his career as a sprinter where he had 3 wins in 5 starts. He then tested the graded stakes company in route races. His first route was very good coming in 3rd in a one mile grade I event on the turf. His next 2 races he tried to stretch it out to a mile and one sixteenth with lesser results. The trainer went back to the sprint races with him anbd he won a 6 furlong stakes race. His last race was a very good 7 furlong race where he came in 4th. He appears better suited for 6 furlongs at this stage of his career and should be one of the contenders for the win.

Czar Venus has just broken his maiden in his last race which was on the dirt. His best speed rating was on the turf in a MSW going 6 1/2 furlongs. In that turf race he covered the course with an 88 speed rating which is very good. His only other try on the turf also resulted in a very good speed rating of 79 in a MSW in North Carolina. Makes a quantum leap into grade I competition today.

Atlantian has 4 wins in 7 starts. This is the way you are supposed to do it. He has worked his way up thru the conditions until he got to the stakes races and now he has won his 2 stakes races. He is on a 3 race winning streak and looking to make it number 4 in a row. Had a 91 speed rating in his race before the last one. Is definately one of the serious contenders in this race. And he has excellent breeding.

Golfing Nijinksky is a truly legitimate contender an comes into this race as the number 33 ranked 3 year old in the sim. He is a blue blood grandson, great grandson, and great-great grandson of Northern Dancer. He is a Grade I winner having won the Open To The World Grade I stakes race in Ireland at 7 furlongs. He registered a 104 speed rating in that race and is the best speed figure in the race. He has 2 wins in 3 tries on the turf. He will have no problem with the surface or the distance.

Green Wiz Prince is very nicely bred for the turf. He does have graded race experience, coming in 9th in a grade I event in Ireland at 7 furlongs. That experience should help him today. His speed ratings have been increasing in his last 2 races and the trainer is confident that he can compete here today. He will have to pick up his speed alot more today.
WIN: AFFIRMED DANCER
PLACE: GOLFING NIJINSKY
SHOW: ATLANTIAN
ANALYSIS & BET: There are many very good looking 3 year olds in here and it does make it a little tough, but there are two that really stick out right now and they are AFFIRMED DANCER and GOLFING NIJINSKY. As I look at the past performances for GOLFING NIJINSKY I was very impressed with his high speed figures and especially the one he had in the Grade I "Open To The World" where he got a very high 104 speed rating. But that was at 7 furlongs and his last race was at this distance and he came up a little short trying to come from the back. This leads me to believe that he may have wanted that extra distance up to 7 furlongs or more. Really for him a lot depends on what the trainer does. If he tries to come from the back again he may come up short once again. If he goes all out from the lead then he could just do it in record time.
AFFIRMED DANCER on the other hand looks like he likes this distance and when he went longer he did not quite have it. He also has been practicing with different running styles. If he goes out to the front and GOLFING NIJINSKY tries from the back then he will have an easy time of it I would think. Then if they both go to the lead all out we will have one heck of a horse race. I will have to give the edge here though to AFFIRMED DANCER based on his experience in Graded Stakes races. Not that GOLFING NIJINSKY does not have any, it's just that his experience in the Breeder's Bowl Juvenile Mile will help him quite a bit in this race.
As far as the show spot goes I think we will see ATLANTIAN moving up there because he has been handled very well by the trainer. He has moved him up cautiously thru the different conditions and let him work his way up to this top competition. He should have a lot of energy in him still since he has not competed against so many tough ones in the Graded races.
THE BET: AFFIRMED DANCER across the board. Exacta bet AFFIRMED DANCER with GOLFING NIJINSKY, ATLANTIAN, SIM TOGETHER, and BBORASCAS. Then flip it for a lesser amount.
