Richard Migliore was born on March 14th 1964 in Babylon New
York. As a young
boy he rode horses and always enjoyed it. He raced ponies with
his friends
on weekends and became very good at it.
After watching Forego
win the
Marlboro Cup in 1976 he decided that he wanted to become a
professional
jockey. He then quit school at age 14 and went to the racetrack
to become a
jockey. He got a job with trainor Steve DiMauro and went under
contract for
him right when he turned 16 years old. He rode his first winner
at the
Meadowlands in 1980. His career was almost an immeadiate success
throughout
his apprenticeship winning 269 races in New York a record that
still stands
today as the most ever by an apprentice and the most for that
year for all
jockeys. This feat won him the 1981 eclipse award for best
apprentice
jockey.
His career continued to progress very well winning the
Wood Memorial
in 1985. He went on to win 4 riding titles in the 80's. He
developed the
nickname of the "mig" for his tenacious riding style. He has
suffered from
many near-fatal injuries throughout his career. He has broken
his arms,
neck, leg, and wrist. The breaking of his leg caused him to miss
out on what
would have been his first Breeders Cup Winner aboard Artie
Schiller.
He has
rode several great horses throughout his career. Including
champion race
mare Hidden Lake, Fourstardave, Thunder Rumble, Wild Again,
Storm Cat, Artie
Schiller and many more. One of his greatest feats has came
recently when he
won his 4,000th race aboard Benjamin Baby at Aqueduct, he became
the 43rd
jockey to do so. He says he considers 5,000 wins a reasonable
goal for the
future. He considers his career a success and hopes to continue
that way and
has a true love for the game one which he feels he will never
leave.
