Dateline - 1987. Sandy Hawley diagnosed with cancer and given
only a few months to live.
Dateline - 1998. Sandy Hawley retires from racing after a 31
year career. Among his accomplishments: 31,455 mounts, 6,449 wins,
$88,666,071 in purse earnings, 18 Woodbine riding titles, twice
won seven races in a single day at Toronto’s Woodbine Racetrack
and at Santa Anita Park had six wins in a single day on two
occasions, awarded the Lou Marsh Trophy in 1973 and 1976 as
Canada’s top athlete, awarded the Order of Canada, 2 Eclipse
Awards, awarded the Santa Anita Park George Woolf Memorial Jockey
Award, induction into the Canterbury Park Hall Of Fame (1 of only
5 jockeys so honoured), induction into the Canadian Racing Hall Of
Fame, induction into Canada's Sports Hall Of Fame, induction into
The National Museum Of Racing Hall Of Fame, the first rider in the
history of Thoroughbred racing in North America to win 500 races
in a single season,
Dateline - Present. Sandy Hawley continues in his role as
Woodbine Racetrack's Ambassador Of Racing.
