Dateline - 1948. Lester Piggott wins his first race at the age
of 12. His
mother's comment: 'He is quite a good rider, but will never be
as good as
his father. Don't make a fuss, Lester is just a very ordinary
boy.'
Dateline - 1954. Lester Piggott wins his first Derby with the
33-1 longshot
Never Say Die. He later won the Derby another eight times:
Crepello (1957),
St. Paddy (1960), Sir Ivor (1968), Nijinsky (1970), Roberto
(1972), Empery
(1976), The Minstrel (1977) and Teenoso (1983).
Dateline - 1960. Lester Piggott wins his first of eleven
Championships. The
others are 1964-71 and 1981-82.
Dateline - 1970. Lester Piggott wins the Triple Crown with
Nijinsky.
Dateline - 1973. Lester Piggott wins his first Prix de l'Arc de
Triomphes on
Rheingold. He later won that race two times with Alleged in 1977
and 1978.
Dateline - 1987. Lester Piggott serves a jail sentence for tax
evasion.
Dateline - 1990. Lester Piggott wins the Breeders' Cup Mile with
Royal
Academy, 12 days after his comeback (he retired five years
earlier).
Dateline - 1995. Lester Piggott retires at the age of 59 years.
He won over
5,300 races in 28 countries, of them 465 were group races.
